My Bio
Hi! My name is Mathew Worcester.

I grew up on a farm in Kansas, joined the military, and went around the world a few times. I've been drawing since before I could write. As I got better, I moved into painting and other areas such as etching and sculpture, jewelry, lithography, photography, digital art, and more. There is very little I have not tried and loved, except for watercolor. Not for me!

One thing about my art is that, for my major pieces, I will NEVER use a photo of any sort. All comes from whatever images are rolling around in my head. Most are intensely personal and I never share the story. Feel free to invent your own!

I am classically trained, and I tend to do a mix between surrealism and optical illusion. It is a new trend that I have deemed "Dimensionalism" for the moment being, however. Feel free to contact me anytime and talk art, I love it!

Lastly, I apologize sincerely for the seriously crappy pictures. When I finish a piece I just snap a picture and go. I need to do a better job getting them into digital format! Please take it for what it is.

Cheers,

Matt

Phone art

I recently purchased a new galaxy note 3. I wanted to test out its capabilities so I thought I would try out the stylus and how well it can draw. What I found out was that it was pretty awesome. Take a look at my newest uploads! These were all made on my phone. crazy right? While the phone is large, keep in mind is about the same as drawing on two post - it notes stacked on top of each other. What I really found out was the ease and accessibility of it allowed me to draw at any time. I also loosened up. Since I was making these wherever, whenever it was really different than when I would sit down to draw. Quite fun! The possibilities of tech

A few simple tricks to drawing well. - There are no lines in reality. If you are drawing any sort of realism, and you have lines, take them out and use different shades to establish the borders of your objects. - Always shade with the curves of the object! - Don't smudge, please don't smudge to achieve a smooth effect. Instead learn to use the pencil pressure. Take the time, keep the pencil sharp, and fill in negative space slowly to get the smoothness desired. - Slow down. :) - Remember to use the negative space of the paper! - Start off with a hard pencil, like a 2h or 4h for the initial sketching. This makes it easier to erase and re

I am working on my latest piece. The main subject is my son, swinging in a swing. There is a lot more that is going to go on, however, to help tell the story. I am thinking of having some butterflies drawn into the drawing that then come out and fly around and eventually land and mold back into the drawing. I want the part of the butterflies that are part of the drawing (not flying around) to then turn into a tessellation that morphs into something else. Ideas? I am thinking an angel. I want the edge of the tessellation to turn into real angels that are interacting with my son. Any ideas as to other things that might be able to add to this?

Haven't been back to Deviant for a couple of years, just found a comment of yours and never thanked you (thank you!).  Nor did I see your gallery.  Impressive!  Really impressive.
A little late, but thanks for watching! :D
You are most welcome!
Three weeks ago you commented on a drawing of mine - Very good lines behind the main body. Good flow. I like it.... Thank you so much - means alot. I've been *away* so apologize in being so remiss in replying. Thank you also for your free advice in your ID. How true, especially SLOW DOWN! Work in graphite is work in a meditative state, if I'm having a good day. If not, I put it aside! Anyway, thanks again. Love your work, excuse me while I have a good ol' explore.
So true about slowing down. My drawings are therapeutic to me. I slow down but time flies. Thanks for all the comments. I enjoy learning from other artists! There is more coming down the chute. And I look forward to yours as well!
